File Manager for Chromebook
Chromebooks run ChromeOS — a Linux-based OS with full support for Android apps via the Play Store. AnExplorer installs on any Chromebook with Android app support and gives you access to everything the native Files app misses: network shares, FTP servers, cloud storage beyond Google Drive, and full Android file system operations.

- Acer Chromebook — Chromebook Spin, Chromebook Enterprise, Chromebook Plus
- Samsung Galaxy Chromebook — Galaxy Chromebook, Galaxy Chromebook 2, and premium Chromebook Plus-style models
- Lenovo Chromebook — IdeaPad Duet, Flex, and ThinkPad Chromebook families
Virtually all Chromebooks released after 2019 support Android apps via the Play Store. Check your model at chromeos.dev.
How to Install AnExplorer on ChromeOS
- Open the Google Play Store on your Chromebook
- Search for AnExplorer
- Click Install and launch the app from the launcher
- If the Play Store is not available, enable Android apps in Settings → Apps → Google Play Store first
AnExplorer runs in a resizable window and supports keyboard, mouse, touch, and trackpad input. On larger Chromebooks, that makes it much closer to a desktop file-manager workflow than a phone-style app.
File Manager for Different Chromebook Styles
Chromebooks are not all used the same way, so the right workflow depends on the hardware style:
| Model family | Best fit | Why AnExplorer helps |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy Chromebook | Premium OLED, convertible, phone-adjacent workflows | Better archive, SMB, and Android-to-Chromebook workflows |
| Lenovo Chromebook | Portable, classroom, and travel setups | Better downloads, USB, SD, and transfer workflows |
| Acer Chromebook | Entry-level to mainstream | Better local + network storage coverage |
| Google Pixelbook | Premium laptop workflow | Better Android-side file management alongside browser work |
Why Use AnExplorer Over ChromeOS Files?
The built-in ChromeOS Files app is limited to Google Drive, local Downloads, and connected USB drives. AnExplorer extends this significantly:
| Capability | ChromeOS Files | AnExplorer |
|---|---|---|
| Google Drive | ✅ | ✅ Available now |
| Dropbox / OneDrive | ❌ | ✅ |
| SMB Network Shares | ❌ | ✅ |
| FTP Servers | ❌ | ✅ |
| Archive (ZIP/RAR) | Limited | ✅ Full |
| Linux files (Crostini) | ✅ | ✅ |
| Bulk rename / move | ❌ | ✅ |
Access Windows Network Shares from Chromebook
Connect to a Windows PC or NAS on your home network using SMB:
- Open AnExplorer → Network → Add Storage → SMB
- Enter your server IP (e.g.
192.168.1.10), share name, username, and password - Browse the share — files load directly without downloading
Works with Windows shared folders, Synology, QNAP, and any SMB 2.x/3.x server.

Transfer Files from Chromebook to Android Phone
Use AnExplorer's WiFi Transfer for instant, cable-free file sharing:
- On your Chromebook, open AnExplorer and tap WiFi Share
- Select files to share — an HTTP server starts locally
- On your Android phone, open the URL in Chrome to download, or open AnExplorer → WiFi Receive
Alternatively, use FTP Server mode for a persistent connection from any FTP client.

ChromeOS Workflows AnExplorer Improves
- Phone ↔ Chromebook transfer — use Android to Chromebook and Phone to Chromebook when local transfer matters more than a cable workflow
- Windows share and NAS access — browse SMB storage directly from the Android side of ChromeOS
- Archive cleanup — inspect and extract ZIP, RAR, 7z, TAR, and GZ files more flexibly than the default Files app
- Cloud handoff — use the cloud guides when your files move between Chromebook local storage, Android storage, and cloud providers beyond Google Drive
